Annual Town Meeting – Wednesday 29th April 2026
Appleby’s Annual Town Meeting took place in the Public Hall Supper Room on Wednesday, 29th April. Despite the very sunny evening, 35 people attended the meeting, for what was a lovely celebration of all the amazing work our community groups do for the benefit of the town.
As well as receiving an update from the Town Council on some of their activities over the past year, the meeting also heard from representatives of 16 groups, who gave an update on all the great work they have been doing over the past year and what their plans are for the coming year.
Copies of the update reports from Appleby Council and Tourist Information Centre have been collated, as well as the reports given by the local organisations, into the below full report.

Extraordinary Parish Meeting – Wednesday 4th December 2024
The Police Gold Commander, Dan St Quentin, was in attendance and gave a presentation about Fair Hill from a policing perspective.
A number of the 10 residents who attended the meeting were of the mis-understanding that the Council had called the meeting because they wanted to change the arrangements. The Council has no plans to change the arrangements for Fair Hill. The meeting was called following receipt of an email to Appleby Town Council from 74 residents via the Appleby Communities Fair Group Facebook page. The emails received stated they did not want Fair Hill (or any other parish land) to be used for the purpose of Appleby Fair and that Appleby Town Council should distance themselves from Horse Fair, with a request that a Parish Meeting be called to discuss these issues.

Annual Town Meeting – Wednesday 24th April 2024
A great turnout for Appleby’s Annual Town Meeting, celebrating all the amazing work being done in the community
Appleby Council hosted the Annual Town Meeting on Wednesday, 24th April at the Public Hall.
A buffet and refreshments were served prior to the meeting, during which Appleby & Westmorland Society showed a slideshow of some of the amazing photos in their archives, of Appleby through the years. The meeting was attended by approx. 50 residents and was chaired by Cllr Pamela Davidson, the current Town Mayor and Chair of Appleby Town Council.
Andrea Huxley, the Development Officer for Cumbria CVS’s new ‘This is US’ project was also in attendance. The project offers voluntary organisations and community groups support and guidance in a range of topics, including governance, funding, business planning and volunteering.
Questions raised by residents included a complaint made by a local business owner that people working in businesses in town are parking in the town centre parking bays taking up spaces that could be used by visitors. Another resident asked about the plans for the temporary car park at Edenside and Clive Wigley, the Chief Executive of Oaklea Trust explained that although the planning application had been approved in principle, there were still conditions that had to be met before any demolition work could start.
Appleby’s new PC Andy Watson introduced himself to residents and gave a brief report on some of the issues the police have been dealing with recently, including drug related crimes and anti-social behaviour.
The meeting then heard from representatives of 16 different community groups and organisations, who each gave a report on their activities over the past year and outlined their future plans. Cllr Davidson thanked all the representatives from the groups for taking the time to come along to the meeting and how wonderful it was to hear of all the great work that is being down within the community. All of the reports will be collated together and published on the Council’s website as soon as possible.
